  2. Arun Goel is an IAS officer from the Punjab cadre who graduated in 1985. He was scheduled to retire on December 31 at the age of 60, but he retired voluntarily last Friday instead.

  3. Until his voluntarily taking a retirement, he was the secretary for heavy industries. He formerly worked for the union ministry of culture.
  4. Days before the Gujarat elections, which could see increased political tension between the incumbent BJP, the opposition Congress, and newcomers AAP, Goel was appointed.
  5. Arun Goel is also the next in line to succeed Rajiv Kumar as chief election commissioner (CEC) in February 2025. The election commissioner, often known as CEC, position may be held for up tosix more years, or until you become 65.
  6. With Goel in charge, the poll panel will now have all of its resources at its disposal when deciding on the dates of elections that will take place in Karnataka, Telangana, and the northeastern states of Nagaland, Meghalaya, Tripura, and Karnataka the following year.
